{"id":6759,"date":"2018-08-29T17:15:23","date_gmt":"2018-08-29T17:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kele.com\/content\/?p=6759"},"modified":"2018-08-31T18:36:44","modified_gmt":"2018-08-31T18:36:44","slug":"tech-talk-how-do-surge-suppressors-protect-circuits-from-harmful-voltages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kele.com\/content\/blog\/howdosurgesupressorsprotectcircuits","title":{"rendered":"Tech Talk: How do surge suppressors protect circuits from harmful voltages?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.2.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0 \u00a0How do surge suppressors\u00a0protect circuits from harmful voltages?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0 \u00a0The short answer is that they shunt (\u201cshort out\u201d) the high voltage to ground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Each surge suppressor is connected to a specific circuit. It switches the connected power\u2014or communication circuit\u2014to earth ground much like an automatic \u201cOff\/On\u201d switch. Or if the surge device is a fuse, it opens the connection, thus protecting the main device. The trick is to clamp at a voltage high enough for the control circuit to operate normally while dissipating highly damaging voltage to ground. This is called the \u201cclamp level voltage\u201d of the surge protector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Certain high voltages happen very fast\u2014sometimes as fast as microseconds (\u00b5 sec). Lightning is a perfect example. The table below shows many of the devices Kele offers.
